Portals

Portal

noun

  1. a door to another world

  2. an entry point to transformation

The universe is full of portals. If you look closely enough, they're everywhere.

We tend to miss it when we’re not paying attention. You can walk by a street your entire life and never realize you’ve passed one.

However, there are those obvious ones you can’t miss. A portal appears in front of you when the universe decides to intervene with your regular life:

You visit a foreign country and feel you’ve lived there in a past life. You talk to a spiritual guru and they reveal your unconscious desires. You meet the person who shares your soul and that connection forever changes you.

It's like a glitch in the matrix. You wonder: where has this experience been all my life? Why am I only witnessing this now? How come nobody is talking about this?

Portals remind us that life is one big mystery to explore. It’s a way our soul tells us that there is so much more to life than what we know.

A portal can be anything. It can be a place, a person, or an experience. If you feel you're accessing your innermost chambers, you've just entered one.

In this article, we’ll discuss the two deepest portals of life: the birth and death portal.

There are infinite rabbit holes in the universe. But the beginning and ending of life are two portals all must pass through.

1. The death portal.

Death does not only mean physical death.

You die many times in your life: when you end a relationship, when you move out of our parent’s home, when someone dear to you passes away…

You also die when you’ve reached significant milestones. When you graduate from school, the student version of you dies. When you marry someone, the single version of you dies. When you’re expecting a baby, the child-free version of you dies.

You also die when you uncover deep psychological wounds. It could be brought to the surface by dramatic events. Or when you consciously explore your traumas through therapy or other practices.

These deaths help us transform beyond our old comforts. It also allows us to prepare for the ultimate death: the end of our life.

Most people are afraid of this portal because it signifies a permanent ending.

It can indeed be a daunting experience. What’s not true is that death is the be-all and end-all. If new experiences are ahead when we end a life phase, how are we sure that it isn’t the same after our physical death?

Paradoxically, the death portal teaches us that there’s no such thing as death. It doesn’t matter if it’s literal or metaphorical. Whenever something ends, it begins again in a whole different way.

Endings can be painful. The greater our attachments, the greater the sorrow.

But if we knew what would be the other side of death, we wouldn’t be as afraid.

There are many people who've had near death experiences that no longer fear death. They've caught a glimpse in the afterlife. They know the soul returns to pure acceptance, love, and light after every lifetime.

Difficult endings give us the potential to experience the same. We shed layers of ourselves that don’t reflect true nature — parts that are fearful, lacking, and afraid.

The death portal is a potent elixir. It can either break you or regenerate you.

Death is why people radically love themselves after a break-up. It’s why humans turn to a higher calling after reaching their deepest bottom. It’s why wounded children become powerful healers.

Life fazes you less when you've crossed this portal. When you’re present to every feeling and moment, death can transform you like a phoenix rising.

2. The birth portal

The cycle of life never ends. Once you die, you will be born again.

We’ve all passed the birth portal. But not everyone recalls the moment  they were born.

Fortunately, life gives us many opportunities to experience birth. You experience it in your first moments: your first kiss, your first travels, your first friend…

But there’s another side of this portal that’s even more compelling. While you’re constantly being born, you’re also birthing something.

You birth something when you bring something new to the world. Whether it's a baby or creative project, you're creating something out of nothing.

This aspect of birth is mystifyingly beautiful. It’s like sinking to a labyrinth that temporarily removes you from the ordinariness of life.

You’re tending to something that has not been born yet. You’re falling in love with a concept that hasn’t taken physical form. You’re moving past your ego self in service to what you’re creating.

You see it in a mother’s love for a child. You see it in an artist’s devotion to their craft.

It’s magical but not always glamorous. You can lose sleep, feel tired, and get lost in the whirlwind of emotions. Every ounce of your being is required for your creation to develop healthily.

You can also feel anxious when your creation taking a while to come to life; wondering if what is in you will ever see the light of day.

Like a loving parent, you have to be patient. It’s not for you to decide when they want to be born. All you can do is offer yourself and surrender to the experience.

Because once your creations enter the world, you’re never the same again. Whatever your life dramas are, you suspend it for awhile because you've created a miracle. You’ve caught a glimpse of true beauty. You’ve gotten in touch with the only thing that’s real.

Birth and death may seem like opposite portals leading to two opposite things. In reality, both transport us to the same place: the place of pure unconditional love.
